How Empaths Can Stay Grounded in Overwhelming Times How Empaths Can Stay Grounded in Overwhelming Times | Shamanic Healer | Spiritual Life & Business Coach | Meghan Gilroy | Paonia CO
Checking in… How are you faring these WTF times?

For so many, the ground seems to be shifting under our feet with so many fast changes – whether it’s in our personal lives or out in the larger world in the political arena.

Within myself and from my students and friends, the reports are about feeling:

Feed up… overwrought… soul tired…

Before you can process one piece of upsetting or confusing information, the new wave has already arrived.

For those of us who are empaths, highly sensitive people, intuitive or introverts, the world can feel particularly loud and full of static right now.

I shared with you in my last email that I was giving myself permission to hibernate and rest in winter energy.

As the Earth is waking up, I’ve also been coming “back to life,” visioning and planning for the year and being more engaged.

I’ve had to tend to my nervous system and energy so tenderly with all that’s shifting in my personal life as well as the onslaught from the news.

So I’d like to share a technique that’s been working for me and my private clients when you’re feeling saturated with emotion, when your thoughts are looping or the world feels too much.

It emerged after I had the same conversation with several women over several days.

They were struggling because of an inner conflict around watching the news or scrolling on social media.

They were receiving a clear signal from their bodies that it was time to limit how much news they took in – and yet they felt guilty if they didn’t stay informed.

Here’s what is feeling true to me.

The biggest contribution most of us make to the world is our energy.
(Unless you are a highly public figure or in charge large numbers of people.)

We can make it a practice to contribute joy, creativity, centeredness (and tend to ourselves when we aren’t.)

Or we can use up our energy with guilt, worry and fear – which means we unconsciously affect and spread that energy in our immediate surroundings.
And have less energy for action.

Most of us have a limited sphere of influence.

We mostly impact our immediate circle of friends, family, the people in our community as we run errands, or our co-workers or clients.

So the biggest antidote to what’s happening
in the world and the best tool we have to
create change is tending to ourselves.

If we each tended to our vital life force energy and the connections we have influence over – and thousands and millions and billions of us did so, then we would live on a very different planet.

Okay, so how to Reset in a WTF World when so much is going on?

1. Feel.
Set a timer and give yourself 90 seconds (or 3 minutes or 1 hour – whatever you need) to scan your body for what you are feeling, breathe into the sensation and give it safe passage through you.

An important note: I am the queen of allowing and acknowledging your authentic emotion. And. I’ve recently discovered that I have been feeding my feelings with looping thoughts, so I’ve been consciously limiting how long I allow myself to run the anxiety, angst or frustration through. Tune into what’s true for you.

2. Ask.
“Do I have control over this situation? Am I inspired to take action?”
If the answer is no, let it go and…

3. Shift your attention.
Take your attention from the maddening partner, problem at work, latest tragedy and bring it back to yourself and your body. Rebuild and nurture your centeredness and joy.

Dance. Put on music (here’s the playlist I have on repeat). Get out into nature. Sit at your altar. Light a candle. Check in with what you notice about your immediate surroundings, your physical body, your emotions, your mind, your Spirit.

4. Discern.
Pay attention to when your mind loops back to the same problem or situation. (And it will!)

If it’s a new consideration or circumstance, repeat the process. If it’s not new and you are torturing yourself…

Be disciplined. Gently say, “We’re not putting our attention on that right now.” Go back to shifting your attention with a body-based activity above.

5. Repetitive prayer and mantras.
When I am really “in it” and my mind won’t stop, I’ve been using prayer for myself and all women, all beings on the planet who are going through the similar situations.

My favorites:

“Peace within me. Peace around me. Peace above me. Peace below me. Peace to the right of me. Peace to the left of me.” Repeat.

Or “May I be free of suffering. May you be free of suffering. May all women be free of suffering. May ____ be free of suffering.” Repeat.

Alright my loves. One final thought.
Right now it feels vital to have regular centering Sacred Practices.

I share one that can take less than a few minutes on this blog Forget a Daily Practice or Morning Routine – Try This Instead.
